Japanese Language & Cultural Immersion | Sydney

Immerse yourself in the Land of the Rising Sun on this six-day tour of Sydney that aims to provide students the opportunity to develop their Japanese language skills through a series of engaging, interactive cultural experiences. Australia’s rich history of engagement with Japan means that there are countless learning opportunities on offer right here in our own backyard. Senior Years Chemistry | Wollongong

Develop and build the knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to the properties and structures of matter, the types, and drivers of chemical reactions and how we measure the quantities involved in these processes on this tour through Wollongong. Examine classes of chemicals, processes and a variety of chemical reactions which incorporate organic compounds and acid/base equilibrium reactions. This tour challenges students to apply their knowledge of chemistry to the investigation of a range of methods used in identifying and measuring quantities of chemicals. It is designed to cover the senior years curriculum as an overview of chemistry or used as part of a depth study program.

Exploring The Universe

Physics | Parkes & Coonabarabran

Take the class on an adventure while investigating how physicists explore the universe using a combination of mechanical and electromagnetic waves and light on a tour to some of Australia’s significant telescopes. Start your investigation in Parkes, “the dish”, where students conduct a practical investigation involving sound vs. light waves, creating mechanical vs. electromagnetic waves. While there, explore different types of telescopes and study the pros and cons of each. Afterwards, head to Siding Springs Australian Astronomical Observatory near the picturesque Warrumbungle National Park, Australia’s first designated Dark Sky, to explore the universe using optical and infrared telescopes.

STEM | Lake George and Lake Bathurst

Uncover the mysteries of the disappearing lakes on this tour to regional NSW. Take part in eco-tours of two endorheic lakes and observe the environmental phenomenon that occurs around the closed-drainage basins. Students train under the supervision of local scientists to collect water samples from five different sites of each lake to unravel the mystery.

Energy for Everyday Life

Chemistry | Shell Harbour, Jenolan Caves, North Ryde

Offering a unique and hands-on approach to fundamental thermochemistry ideas by taking the experiments out into nature, explore the scientific principles of enthalpy, energy change and chemical bonds. Students conduct a series of investigations over the course of the program to quantify energy stored within everyday samples and relate them to their roles as fuels to produce energy, heat or survival. The aim of this course is to challenge students whilst teaching them to work independently, solve problems and think outside the box.

Tour Highlights:

  • Construct individual calorimetry devices to measure and collect data on the change of enthalpy produced by burning nuts and plant samples.
  • Investigate carbonate reactions in both the natural environment – in cave formations, and in industrial use – in the development of gyprock to comprehend stepwise chemical reactions.
  • Observe a demonstration that proves the hypothesis of the 1937 investigation into the explosion of the Hindenburg Airship
  • Compare energy exchange and combustion between electric and traditional fueled vehicles in a goKart challenge

Earth & Environmental Studies | Kioloa

Investigate the sedimentary rock sequences found in Kioloa-area rocky headlands and understand the palaeo-environmental implications of materials found in those rocks on an immersive 3-day program on the NSW South Coast. During this program, explore the possible geological process most likely to have driven the formation of these amazing rock sequences. Be introduced to a wide variety of sedimentary depositional processes and embedded palaeo-environmental indicators through lectures, outcrop visits and associated practical activities and readings prior to performing their targeted data collection activities.

Kioloa
  • An introduction to geoscience concepts used to analyse and understand sedimentary rocks and fossils with leading geologists
  • Identify origins of fossils, the processes that form fossils and the uses geoscience can make of fossils in understanding changes in life through time
  • Field work exercises to observe sediments and fossils found within the rocks.
  • Discuss weathering and erosion and the concepts of cross-cutting relationships and unconformities to be linked into these observations.

Investigate the impact the Snowy Mountains Scheme has had on river systems, specifically the iconic Snowy River. Gain insights into the Snowy Mountains Scheme, how it was built and what its primary and secondary objectives were when it was built. Explore the environmental issues that were formed because of the original engineering works on the Snowy River at and downstream of Jindabyne and investigate the more recent engineering works designed to address these issues that were a consequence of the original design.
