Travelling through the South Island from Queenstown to Christchurch, then the North Island from Rotorua to Auckland, this tour takes in the best of New Zealand’s incredible geographical phenomena. Accompanied by an expert guide with specific geography knowledge and expert knowledge of all areas the group will visit, students will have a lecture and/or learning experience following a related education activity every day.
This itinerary is designed to cover the key concepts of change, distance, distribution, movement, place, process, region, scale, spatial association and sustainability as well as practice skills associated with digital terrain model (DTM) – landscape visualisation, cartography, coordinate systems, cross sections, direction, GIS, GNSS and image interpretation.

    investigating hazards and land changes

Experience the North Island’s diverse urban and natural landscapes from the cosmopolitan capital of Wellington to the surreal lunarscape of Tongariro National Park and the soaring Kauri trees at Waipoua Forest. Explore Māori and Pacific culture, traverse unique natural environments and examine the complex history that shaped New Zealand into the nation it is today.

Investigate different food biomes and analyse the connections between food webs, threats to ecosystems and actions for recovery. Visit the locations of famous film shoots and learn about the impacts this and subsequent tourism has had on the environment with industry professionals.

  • Participate in a traditional Māori ceremony and partake in hangi
  • Discover the importance of bees in food production and understand threats to food security
  • Explore ‘Middle Earth’ – the location of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy – and discuss the impact of filming and subsequent tourism on the environment
  • Meet with the founder of a social enterprise who is tackling food waste to discuss what can be done to ensure food security
  • Contrast Māori methods of growing food with contemporary farming and agricultural practices with local farmers and producers
  • Compare the treatment of the Māori to Australia’s First Nations peoples at locations that demonstrate colonisation and its legacy
  • Investigate the similarities and differences between the Māori and Indigenous Australians by comparing cultural behaviours, including song, dance and art
