Depth Studies Fieldwork Programs NSW Curriculum

In response to the recent changes to the NSW Science curriculum, Latitude Group Travel has created Depth Studies fieldwork programs, covering each Science subject and module.

Latitude Group Travel custom designs 3-day fieldwork programs to link to each NSW Science subject and module.

These experiential science education programs give students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in practical, real-world environments. Through hands-on learning and active study experiences, students engage with topics such as environmental science, biology, physics, chemistry, and earth sciences in meaningful, curriculum-aligned contexts. Our fieldwork programs are designed to deepen scientific understanding, develop inquiry skills, and foster a lifelong interest in STEM education.

STIMULATE YOUR STUDENTS’ INTEREST IN SCIENCE BY GETTING THEM OUT OF THE CLASSROOM AND INTO REAL-WORLD ENVIRONMENTS

OUR PROGRAMS:

  • Cover data collection and analysis
  • Address the two required Knowledge and Understanding criteria and more
  • Include the required Working Scientifically requirements and more
  • Allow students to ask questions of experts in their fields
  • Allow them to produce a fieldwork report or to further investigate the topic/s
  • Provide impetus for students to complete their depth study
  • Provide time to collect data for their chosen hypothesis for their Depth Study assessment task

Each Depth Study Fieldwork Program has been carefully crafted by subject and module, with exciting activities

We will provide support in the form of a short workshop to help students form inquiry questions.

OPTIONS:

  • Run an excursion across multiple modules
  • Link your depth study to an assessment task
  • Custom design an itinerary for your predefined inquiry questions
    and field trip ideas
  • Create a unique program for the Scientific Research Portfolio
    requirements for Science Extension

Depth Studies & Fieldwork Tours Tailored for You

Our programs connect students with the real-world application of science in diverse environments, supporting NSW curriculum objectives through immersive activities like:

  • Environmental science fieldwork in national parks or coastal regions, collecting and analysing biodiversity and sustainability data.

  • Ecological surveys in marine or freshwater ecosystems to study population dynamics, human impact, and climate science.

  • Investigating the ‘pink lake’ and its mysteries, combining chemistry and ecology in a unique natural setting.

  • Physics investigations at science centres or observatories, applying principles of motion, energy, and force.

  • Creating rockets with different fuels, testing energy transformation and propulsion concepts.

  • Chemistry in action via soil and water sampling, pollution testing, and laboratory-style analysis in the field.

  • Investigating plant respiration enthalpy in rock pools, linking chemistry and biology in real-world ecosystems.

  • Earth and space science activities, such as fossil analysis, geologic mapping, and exploration of sedimentary processes.

  • Tagging and identifying fish in a zone of significant natural and anthropological diversity.

  • Exploring taste perception at a food innovation lab to understand how biology and culture influence sensory science.

  • Hydro-electric facility visits to investigate the interaction between electricity and magnetism.

  • Visits to STEM hubs and science museums to complement fieldwork with educational exhibits and demonstrations.

  • Hands-on inquiry tasks that strengthen students’ scientific research skills and align with Depth Study assessments.

  • Collaborative data analysis and presentations that replicate professional scientific communication and teamwork.

  • Science research projects supported by facilitators with expertise in science education and environmental science.

ALL SCIENCE SUBJECTS AND MODULES

OPEN THEIR EYES TO A WORLD OF POSSIBILITY

For the delivery of the Chemistry and Physics Depth Study programs, we have partnered with Science education specialists, Fizzics Education.  If you know them, you will know that they normally work at your school, providing educational experiences, however for these Depth Studies, each module takes place in a real world situation outside the classroom, as do all the other modules, developed by Latitude Group Travel.

Latitude Group Travel is Australia’s leading provider of educational programs and study tours, both nationally and internationally. We are passionate about ensuring students become excited about the possibilities in Science/STEM and wish to support teachers in creating Australia’s future STEM professionals.
